Ces citations concernent la lecture mais s’appliquent aussi à n’importe quel enseignement scolaire. Il s’agit de croire que les apprentissages scolaires se font de manière naturelle et implicite ; l’école ne serait là que pour créer les conditions environnementales propices.
Le naturalisme est donc la croyance selon laquelle l’enfant acquiert les apprentissages scolaires par un processus naturel, selon des formes et des rythmes qui lui sont propres. Ces acquisitions sont efficaces uniquement si elles sont en relation avec les objectifs de la vraie vie. L’enseignement scolaire doit se faire sur le modèle de l’apprentissage de la langue maternelle, selon un processus naturel.
Les partisans de ce principe ont en effet observé qu’en dehors du milieu scolaire nous acquérons d’énormes quantités d’informations sans enseignement spécifique. La manière dont nous apprenons à parler est peut-être le meilleur exemple de notre capacité à intégrer de gigantesques quantités de données complexes sans aucune aide extérieure, réalisant ainsi un apprentissage inconscient, sans effort, rapide.
En lecture par exemple, les principes naturalistes ont abouti à la méthode globale, calquée sur l’acquisition de la langue maternelle. Puisque le jeune enfant apprend sa langue par une exposition aux mots entendus, on en a déduit qu’il en fera de même pour la lecture : une exposition aux mots écrits dans un contexte porteur de sens, suffira pour que les enfants apprennent à lire.
L’apprentissage scolaire est comparé à une croissance naturelle, comme en témoignent les métaphores botaniques dans la langue pédagogique (kindergarten ou jardin d’enfants, désignant la classe de Grande Section aux États-Unis). L’enseignant n’est pas là pour transmettre explicitement quelque savoir ou savoir-faire. Tel le jardinier observant croître ses plantes, il veille sur ses élèves, se tenant à côté et non devant, créant les conditions favorables à cette évolution naturelle, n’imposant rien, ne forçant rien. Les pratiques de classe doivent favoriser ces conditions : par exemple, on ne disposera plus les chaises en rang d’oignon, on admettra dans une classe des élèves d’âges divers (la fameuse hétérogénéité dont on nous a tant vanté les mérites), on laissera chacun progresser à son rythme sans imposer aucune échéance, on n’imposera pas à tous de faire la même chose au même moment…
D’une manière générale, tout ce qui est supposé naturel est bon, tout ce qui est artificiel est mauvais. C’est ainsi que l’on privilégie le faire sur le dire, la discipline devant rester dans son contexte naturel (ex : le programme Hands On en sciences, que l’on a reproduit en France quelques années plus tard sous le label Main à la pâte). Les normes, artificielles, n’ont pas cours à l’école, les récompenses, sanctions, règles de classe sont supposées nuire à l’acte éducatif. L’éducation est centrée sur l’enfant et s’adapte à lui (puérocentrée), contrairement à d’autres conceptions qui soutiennent que l’enfant doit s’adapter à l’éducation qu’il reçoit. Dans son développement le plus extrême, le naturalisme conduit à Summerhill [1].
Malheureusement, aucune donnée probante n’est jamais venue étayer les principes naturalistes éducatifs. Aucune expérience n’a montré même sur un petit nombre d’élèves qu’ils apprenaient mieux de cette façon. Mais c’est sans doute car il n’est pas question dans cette approche d’apprendre à tout prix : en effet, quand on décide que chacun apprendra à son rythme, suivant ses propres modes, implicitement on admet aussi que certains n’apprennent pas.
Par contre, les travaux de David C. Geary sur la théorie psychologique évolutionniste ont montré clairement que les apprentissages artificiels fournis à l’école se faisaient d’une autre manière que les apprentissages naturels. Ce fut un pavé dans la mare. Geary distingue deux types d’apprentissage : ceux qu’il nomme biologiquement primaires, tels qu’apprendre à marcher, à parler, à reconnaître les visages ; ils se font de manière inconsciente. Et ceux qu’il nomme biologiquement secondaires, les apprentissages scolaires, culturels, artificiels, tels que la lecture, l’écriture ; ceux-là ne peuvent se faire de manière inconsciente et facilement, ils se font au prix d’efforts, de motivation externe et par une transmission de la part de quelqu’un qui les possède. On peut penser que c’est la méconnaissance du distinguo entre ces deux types d’apprentissage qui a conduit les chercheurs à penser que les connaissances secondaires pourraient s’acquérir par immersion, c’est-à-dire de manière naturelle. Ce qui est plus surprenant en revanche, est la persistance des thèses naturalistes encore aujourd’hui, après les travaux de Geary, confirmés par ceux de Sweller [2] sur l’architecture et la charge cognitive. Comme quoi, le recours aux données probantes en éducation n’est pas encore un réflexe acquis.

[2] Sweller a montré l’adéquation entre l’architecture cognitive et un enseignement explicite et structuré, partant du simple pour aller vers le complexe. Ce faisant, il explique aussi l’inadéquation du modèle naturaliste constructiviste qui contrevient aux impératifs cognitifs de l’architecture du cerveau humain.
